Nuka News Update
Reporting on the NWL, NWLB, and APYL Leagues
by Evan Guy
Quantum Leap
With the hottest June in the NWL, the Quantum Nukalurks are now knocking on Victory's door for the top spot in the NWL standings. Quantum is two back of the Cave Crickets and tied for second place with the Orange Tourists at 28-20 with 36 to play.
Quantum is 10-3 in June with one of those losses coming on the first day of the month. This week, the Nukalurks went 5-1, winning the first two at Dark before dropping the third and then sweeping the Cherry Ghoulrillas over the weekend.
Part of the Lurks' success has been their outstanding starting pitching. Quantum is the top team in runs allowed in the NWL (190) and have the best Starters ERA (3.25). Their highest current starting ERA is 3.05, held by third starter Tanner Kern (9-1). Roger Carlson (4-4, 2.90), David Strickland (5-5, 2.99), and Loweland Waterdrop (3-1, 1.45) all have sub-3.00 ERAs, leading to Quantum being a tough team to score against. Current closer Owen X (4-1, 4 SV, 3.80) has started five games, too, swapping roles midseason with Waterdrop who has eight saves.
Offensively, the Nukalurks do not stand out, but they are not bad. They are currently 4th in runs scored (252), so they can score runs. They are led offensively by potential MVP RF Eric Streetwalker (.289/9/46). Other contributors include LF Dian Subandrio (.343/5/17), 2B Andy Longface (.357/2/13), and 3B T.J. McMath (.333/3/31). While he only has 13 starts on the season, leadoff hitter 1B Coast Vieira has been helping ramp up the offense, hitting .450 with four home runs, 14 RBI, 17 runs scored, and five stolen bases.
Speaking of Vieira, he was named this week's Player of the Week. In 24 at bats, he had 13 hits (.542 average) with three home runs, eight RBI, and eight runs scored.
Standings
APL and BBL
In the Amusement Park League, the Nuka Bottling Plant Pack (Quantum) remain atop the league. The Pack are now 29-19 and lead by two games. The Grandchester Flying Ants (Cherry) are in second place at 27-21 but are 4-6 in their last 10.
RF Alex Rousseaux of the Bradberton Disciples (Victory) was the top player this week. He was 7 of 14 (.500) with three home runs, eight RBI, and four runs scored.
The Bradberton Boys League completed their regular season with the Fizztop Mountain Conquerors winning the league by two games over the South Bradberton Tycoons. The Mad Mulligan Travelers and the Starport Nuka Hubologists tied for third place at five games back.
Fizztop Mountain and South Bradberton are now facing off in the Bradberton Boys Series for the right to win the second championship of the Bradberton-area youth league. The Safari Adventure Gazelles (now known as the Angry Anaconda Godmodes) won last season.
The Conquerors and Tycoons play Game 2 today of the three-game series. Fizztop Mountain won Game 1 4-3. Fizztop Mountain had to overcome a strong effort from South Bradberton catcher Iestyn Reid, who was 3-4 with a home run and a double, while adding 2 RBI and scoring once in the loss. With a 1-0 lead in the best-of-3 series, the Conquerors will have two chances to close out the Tycoons.
Noah Splashdown was the walk-off hero for Fizztop Mountain. With the game tied in the bottom of the ninth inning, the Conquerors third baseman hit a dramatic solo home run to send the teams home.
"We made a couple of mistakes," said South Bradberton skipper Smokey Ueberroth, "and it cost us."

Standings
Analysis
For the first time, we are not naming Rayburn Point (30-25) as the leaders in the Fog Division. Instead, the Echo Lake Harbormen (31-24) have claimed that spot this week. The Dalton Farm Fog Crawlers (37-18) repeat atop the Harbor Division.
The Harbormen have now won five straight games and 8 of 10. This week, they lost their Monday game in Game 2 of a Game 4 series but won the rest. They also won the first three games at National Park.
The Fog Crawlers had a bad week but are still the top team in the Vim! League. Although they one the first game at National Park on Sunday, this past week, the Crawlers lost the next three to the Gulpers. They then won 2 of 3 at Grand Hotel for a 2-4 week.

MYL Report
The Maine Youth Leagues season has completed and the playoffs are in gear. In the Mount Desert Island Four, the Cliff's Edge Wolves took the league by a game over the Beaver Creek Bowlers. In the Great Diamond Island League, the Pleasant Cove Raiders had a three-game advantage over the Diamond Cove Fort Knights.
Both the Wolves and Raiders will face off for the right to win the Maine Youth Series. Last season, the Far Harbor Dockdwellers won the series in three games over the Echo Point Glowers.
