The Start Of A Franchise

April 11th, 1962....St. Louis

The New York Mets made their debut today under clear skies and close to 60 degree weather. To their detriment, the baseball gods selected Bob Gibson to be the first pitcher they would go up against as a franchise. For the Mets, Bob Miller was the man chosen to try and pitch their way to a win in their first ever game.

Miller actually pitched pretty well....giving up just 1 earned run (3 runs overall) in 7 innings. However, the bullpen gave up 4 more. Even against a Bob Gibson who walked 8 on the other side, that was too many runs. The Mets dropped their first ever game by a score of 7-2.

A few Met firsts in this game-

First hit- Single by Richie Ashburn
First run- Felix Mantilla
First RBI- Hobie Landrith
First double- Richie Ashburn
First double play- Hickman to Neal to Thomas
