Our first road trip of the year finds us defending our unbeaten 2031 record in New York. We did not stay unbeaten (although we should have) but we did the next best thing, taking 3 of 4 from the Bombers at Yankee Stadium.

The Rays tasted defeat for the first time in 2031 in the opener thanks to a bullpen meltdown. They took a 4-1 lead into the bottom of the 8th but Nathan Dettmer gave up a 2-run homer and then in the 9th up 4-3 Kevin DiCostanzo blew his first save of the year when he allowed a 2-out, 2-run single to Raimfer Salinas to give New York a 5-4 walk-off win. Before all that nonsense Michael Prosecky was excellent again at 6 6 1 1 1 7 and has one 1 run allowed in 12 IP so far, and Joshua Baez drove in 3 with a solo homer (#2) and a 2-run single.

Tampa Bay avenged its first 2031 loss with a 9-4 thrashing of the Yankees in the second game, buoyed by a 5-run 5th. That inning included a grand slam from Cristian Hernandez, his first longball of the year, and he added a solo shot later for good measure and a 5-RBI day. JJ Cargill set the tone by leading off the game with his first MLB homer as part of a 3-hit day (he's a cool 7 for 10 to start the season) and Jamie Reiner got a rare start and went 4-5. Shane Panzini pitched around his defense (the Rays made 3 errors including a pair by Reiner at SS on consecutive batters) to get his first win at 6.1 6 3 1 1 6.

After playing several low-scoring games in the early going the Rays won a slugfest with the Yankees 11-10 in extra innings when Joshua Baez singled home the winner in the top of the 10th. Kelly Crumpton's 2nd 2-run homer of the game and the season tied it at 10 in the 6th and the teams cooled off from there before the New York bullpen blinked first. JT Realmuto added his 4th homer, Andy Kelley had 4 hits and a steal, and Wander Franco drove in a pair. John Swanda was awful in his second Rays start, going 2 7 7 4 3 3 and the three unearned runs he allowed were due to his own error. Nathan Dettmer (2-0) picked up the win with 2 shutout innings and Gavin Bruni earned his first save.

James Hays continued his utterly dominant start to 2031 by going 8 2 1 1 0 9 in his third start and has a season line of 24 6 1 1 4 29 to start the year. Raimfer Salinas' 5th-inning solo shot was the first run Hays has allowed this year and it canceled out a Brennon McNair homer (#2) in the 2nd. The Rays had numerous chances late in the game to win before finally breaking through on Kelly Crumpton's RBI single in the 12th. Kevin DiCostanzo (1-1) got the win and Mike Moore notched his first MLB save.

Team record: 10-1. Believe it or not it's not the best record in MLB - that distinction goes to Kansas City which remains perfect at 10-0. Next up: We head to the Lone Star State to play 3 against the Rangers.
