October 1-4, 2048: at NY Yankees (4)

Game 1: The Rays overcame a 4-0 deficit to edge the Yankees 5-4 in the opener of the regular season's final series. Jose Castillo's 2-run shot (#29) in the top of the 9th was the difference and made a winner of Tony Pasillas (8-1) with Steve Falcon getting save #32. Doug Johns hit a 2-run shot for #35 to get them within 4-3 in the 7th and Bob Riley turned in a decent start at 6.1 8 4 3 0 4.

Game 2: Deja vu as the Rays won another 5-4 game with a late run, this time Tony Olivo's RBI single in the 8th which broke a 4-4 deadlock. Yuji Morioka kept them in it with a pair of solo homers to give him 15, and Chad Gardner had an up-and-down start at 5 8 4 3 0 4. Mel Mejia (3-1) picked up the win, and Steve Falcon saved again for his 33rd.

Game 3: The Yankees shellacked the Rays 10-2 in the third game. Greg Bookhart (16-7) took the loss although he was not-terrible 4 6 4 2 2 2; instead it was Chris O'Brien and Caleb Ramos in relief who combined to allow 6 runs. Alex Duran had a consolation homer (#14).

Game 4: The Rays closed out their regular season with a win, handling the Yankees 6-2. Some milestones were achieved in the game, with Mario Saro finally getting RBI #100 on his fourth game of trying, his second such season after driving in 104 in 2046, Jose Castillo launched a solo homer to give him four seasons in four as a Ray with 30 homers, and Melvin Delgado got into double-digits wins and evened his final record at 10-10 with a fine 6 3 1 1 0 3 performance. Alex Duran had a 2-run double, while Jose Carrasco notched his 4th save by getting the final out of the game.

Final Regular Season Record
: 110-52. Next up: The ALCS against either the White Sox or Oakland.

Playoff race update: As I just spoiled in the previous sentence, the Tigers got by the White Sox in the AL Central by taking 3 of 4 in their head-to-head matchup, and Oakland ended up lapping Minnesota by 3 games for the second wild card. Over in the NL the only close race was for the second wild card and Arizona beat out the Cubs by 2 games. The Diamondbacks will got to Milwaukee in the NL Wild Card Game.
