August 31st, 1990
We took the first two of a four game set in New York.
Today the Mets are pitching Kevin Appier (13-6, 2.51).
The Giants have Bob Walk (7-9, 4.21).
I have only gone 0 for 2 against Appier.
I am hitting sixth.
I took care of a Felix Fermin grounder for the 2nd out in the bottom of the 1st.
Wally Joyner scored on a Greg Vaughn single.
Mets lead 1-0
I came up in the 2nd with one out and Ryan Klesko on 1st. I walked.
We were stranded.
I took care of Appier's sac bunt in the bottom half.
I then handled a Mike Gallego grounder for the 3rd out.
I then came up with two out in the 4th and grounded out right back to Appier.
I next came up in the 7th with Harold Baines standing on 2nd. I struck out.
The rest of the frame went better as Harold scored on a Tim Naehring double. Tim, already suffering from a strained hamstring, strained his oblique on the play.
Dale Murphy pinch ran for Tim and scored on a single by Bob.
Giants lead 2-1
Joel Chimelis took over at 2nd.
I took care of a Lenny Dykstra ground ball for the 2nd out in the bottom of the 7th.
In the 8th Ruben Sierra scored on a wild pitch by Kevin Brown.
Ryan scored on a single by Harold.
I came up and walked.
With two out, Harold and I moved up on a wild pitch.
We both scored on a single by Alan Cockrell.
Giants lead 6-1
Scott Garrelts took over in the bottom half.
In the 9th Tom Brunansky hit a two run homer.
With one out and Dykstra on 3rd, Matt brought in Bobby Thigpen.
Dykstra scored on a Kevin Mitchell sac fly.
That was it and we won, 6-4.
I went 0 for 2 with a pair of walks and a run scored.
After the game we got the word on the September call ups, and there were a bunch of them.
Deron McCue, Rod Nichols, Pat Combs, Willie Fraser, Butch Davis, Steve Stanicek, Scott Bradley, Greg Litton, Fran Mullins, Phil Ouellete, Jessie Reid, Luis Medina, Max Venable, Alonzo Powell, and Chris Brown.
The clubhouse is crowded!
