So I think waiting for this to look like NHL 23 will be a looooong way off. Even a game like FM23 has had a 3D match engine for over 14 years and they are getting grief about their graphics not being good enough and their team size is huge and they're in the top 10 selling games on steam every year. Jeff has said often that the FHM team can be counted on one hand.

I'm not expecting 3D in the game anytime soon, but I'd be happy with some 2D looking hockey players in place of the boxes. If I really want a great looking hockey game I can play EA NHL, but I'm a bigger fan of the GM aspect that FHM offers.
