July 25-27, 2031: vs NY Yankees (3)

Not sure I've had a team in any of my Rays saves that's frustrated me this much mainly due to the failpen but in so many other facets as well. This time around they dropped 2 of 3 to the Yankees and while they're still in first it's only by a game now.

The Yankees took the first game 7-2 when a scoreless duel was broken up with a 5-run 5th. Kevin DiCostanzo (5-5) could have been out of that inning with only one run scored but his own fielding error opened the floodgates so despite being dominant at times going 4.2 6 5 1 0 9 he took the loss.

The Rays returned the blowout favor in the second game, crushing the Yankees 11-1 behind their sudden new ace Matt Manning. Manning went to 3-0 since being claimed on waivers from Miami thanks to a 6 1 1 1 3 5 outing and has a combined line of 23 8 2 1 4 12 in those three starts; the .111 BABIP is a bit unsustainable though but we'll enjoy it while it lasts. Meanwhile former Yankee Raimfer Salinas had a big game going 3-4 with HR #14 (25 overall) and 3 RBI while Kelly Crumpton chipped in a 2-run blast (#29) and Chris Gutierrez hit his 9th. Slade Cecconi went the final 3 innings for his 2nd save.

It was the finale which raised my ire as the Rays were one out away from a 1-0 win before it all went wrong and the Yankees took the win and the series 4-2. Raimfer Salinas' 4th-inning RBI single backed a fine outing from Joe Marlette (5 2 0 0 2 4 on 92 pitches) and three scoreless from the non-Nathan Dettmer portion of the bullpen. But Dettmer's struggles continued as he put two on with two out and then gave up consecutive RBI singles, the second of which was the winner and came off the bat of former Ray Andy Kelley. Wander Franco (who's really a lousy defensive SS these days), booted a grounder from the next batter to make it 3-1, and then Mason Feole came in with the sacks full and hit a man on an 0-2 count to make it 4-1. Dong-hwan Kim hit a solo shot (#18) in the bottom of the inning but it was mere consolation. Dettmer (3-5, 6 blown saves) is now out of the closer's job which will go to a combination of Raymells Rosa and Mike Moore. Kevin DiCostanzo has been very good in the rotation so I'm not looking to return him to the pen, but I can see where some might think that should be an option.

Team record: 56-43. Next up: We head to Fenway for 4 including a doubleheader on Monday.
