Games 33 - 35: Boston Americans vs. Washington Senators
Winning just 1 game in a 3-game series is never fun, but knowing that Boston had the lead in the other 2 games heading into the 6th inning only to blow the opportunity is downright disappointing.
Game 33: After enjoying a nice extended homestand, the Boston Americans took to the road to take on the Washington Senators. Despite facing arguably the best pitcher in baseball, Boston jumped out to an early lead against Rube Waddell's Senators only to see the opportunity squandered in the 6th inning due to a Monte Cross 3-run blast. Washington (17-16) would go on to top the Americans (22-11) by a score of 5 to 4. Waddell (7-4) picked up the win despite allowing 4 earned runs on 11 Hits and 3 Walks to finish with a Game Score of 53. Taking the loss for Boston was Fred Klobedanz (6-2) who, if you were to exclude the 6th inning, pitched rather well (also finished with a Game Score of 53). Unfortunately, the 6th inning happened (allowed 3 hits and hit 2 batters) and that was that! At the plate, Boston was led by Ossee Schreckengost (3 for 4, Double, 2 Runs, 1 RBI), Jesse Hoffmeister (3 for 5, 1 RBI), Fred Clarke (2 for 4, Double, 1 Run, 1 Walk), and Win Mercer (2 for 5, Double, 1 RBI).
Player of the Game: Rube Waddell
Game 34: Walk-Off! A clutch 2-out hit by Wid Conroy drove in the winning run as the Washington Senators (18-16) topped the Boston Americans (22-12) by a score of 5 to 4. Jack Chesbro (4-4) picked up the win (Game Score of 48), while reliever Al Orth (0-1) took the loss, with starting pitcher Cy Young getting the no-decision (Game Score of 49). Boston had 11 hits on the day, led by Jesse Hoffmeister (3 for 5, Double, Triple, 1 Run, 1 RBI), Frank Chance (3 for 4), and Fred Clarke (1 for 3, 1 Run, 1 RBI, and 2 Walks), while Washington's 12-hit day was paced by Danny Green (3 for 5, Triple, 2 Runs, 1 RBI), Monte Cross (2 for 4, Double, 1 Run, 1 RBI), and Wid Conroy (2 for 5, 1 Run, 2 RBI).
Player of the Game: Danny Green
Game 35: Boston desperately needed a big outing from its ace, and Noodles Hahn did not disappoint. Leading the Americans (23-12) to a 11 to 4 victory of the Senators (18-17), Hahn (7-3) allowed 4 runs (2 earned) on 8 hits while striking out 9 to finish with a Game Score of 66. Casey Patten was saddled with the loss, allowing 8 runs (7 earned) on 11 hits in 6 1/3 innings; Game Score of 20. Boston had 15 hits on the day, with 6 batters having multiple hits led by John Farrell (3 for 4, 1 RBI, 1 Walk), Ossee Schreckengost (2 for 5, 3 Runs, 1 RBI), and Bill Lange (2 for 5, Double, 3 RBI).
Player of the Game: Noodles Hahn (Season: #7 / Career: #7)
