August 8-10, 2031: at Atlanta (3)

This team continues to struggle to get anything going as a series-opening win was followed by a pair of losses and the Yankees continue to pull away, now 4 1/2 games up in the AL East as a wild card is looking like the best hope, especially with a key injury in the bullpen occurring.

The good Shane Panzini showed up for the opener as he pitched the Rays to a 3-0 win. Panzini (10-3) went 6.1 3 0 0 2 7 and Raymells Rosa had a perfect 9th for his 2nd Rays save. Wander Franco's RBI single and JT Realmuto's 2-run homer (#20) were all the offense they needed.

The Rays' bats were held in check and Joe Marlette was left in a little too long in a 4-1 loss in the second game. Marlette (9-4) went 6 6 4 4 1 8 and gave up two runs in the 6th on the second homer of the game he allowed to Atlanta's Christian Pache. Raimfer Salinas' 30th homer of the year overall (and 19th with the Rays) was the sum total of the offense today.

The bullpen provided both insult and injury today in a 10-6 loss in the rubber match to Atlanta. Kevin DiCostanzo (5-7) struggled in his return to the rotation at 4 3 5 3 3 3 with a Willi Castro error proving costly, and Slade Cecconi gave up a pair of runs in the 6th meaning the Rays' 3-run rally in the 7th meant they were still behind 7-6 instead of ahead 6-5. And later in the 8th Dax Fulton gave up a 2-run homer on a pitch which saw him tear his UCL and not only is he done for the year but we'll be lucky if we see him in 2032 (he could also be a non-tender next year). There was at least some offense with most of it coming via the longball: Kelly Crumpton (#32) and Cristian Hernandez (#15) had solo shots and the 3 runs in the 7th were courtesy of Wander Franco's 16th.

Team record: 61-51. Next up: Finally back home for 3 vs Cleveland.
