Games 39 - 41: Boston Americans vs. Milwaukee Brewers
Another tough series, as Boston dropped 2 of 3 games (each 1 run losses) to the Brewers. While it has been a combination of factors that has led to a 3-7 record in the last 10 games (and there are still a lot of games left to play), the Americans need to turn things around if they want to stay in contention for the American League lead.
Game 39: A pitchers duel had the Boston Americans (23-16) and the Milwaukee Brewers (12-27) locked in a scoreless game heading into the bottom of the 8th inning. That all changed when Milwaukee second baseman Jim Connor smacked a double off of Boston pitcher Noodles Hahn (7-4) to drive in the game's lone run. Frank Owen (5-6) picked up the win for the Brewers, baffling Boston all day and limiting the team to just 5 hits and 2 walks. Hahn (8.0 IP with 1 earned runs, 5 hits, 2 walks, 6 strikeouts) finished with a Game Score of 72, while Owen (9.0 IP, allowing 5 hits, 2 walks, and 5 strikeouts) finished with a Game Score of 81. Milwaukee's Jimmy Barrett had a nice day at the plate (2 for 4, Triple), while Jesse Hoffmeister (2 for 4) led Boston's limited hitting attack.
Player of the Game: Frank Owen
Game 40: Despite coming into the series having the worst record in the American League, the Milwaukee Brewers (13-27) again topped the Boston Americans (23-17), this time by a score of 2 to 1. Jack Sutthoff (3-6) allowed 1 run on 5 hits and 2 walks, striking out 5 to pick up the win; Game Score of 76. Boston pitcher Jesse Tannehill (6-4) took the hard-luck loss, allowing 2 runs (1 earned) on 8 hits to finish with a Game Score of 68. The Brewers were led by Patsy Donovan (2 for 4, Triple, 1 RBI), Jimmy Barrett (2 for 4), and Kip Selbach (2 for 4), while the Americans were led by Frank Chance (2 for 4, 1 Run).
Player of the Game: Jack Sutthoff
Game 41: It was a rainy day in Milwaukee, but the weather didn't affect Boston (24-17) as they topped the Brewers (13-28) by a score of 3 to 1. Fred Klobedanz (7-3) allowed just 1 run (0 earned) on 3 hits and 3 walks (Game Score of 79) to pick up the win. Tom Hughes (2-9) took the loss, allowing 1 run (earned) on 4 hits and 2 walks to finish with a Game Score of 74. Milwaukee relief pitcher Patsy Flaherty allowed 2 runs (both earned) on 3 hits in his 1 inning pitched.
Player of the Game: Fred Klobedanz (Season: #3 / Career: #3)
