Pitcher Lew Deardorff was with the 1951 Lockport (NY) Reds of the Pennsylvania-Ontario-New York (PONY) League for about a month. Prior to that, he was the ace pitcher for the University of Miami Hurricanes. In that capacity, in March of 1951, he pitched in an exhibition game for Miami against the Brooklyn Dodgers' "B" team. He hurled seven innings and yielded only one run and four hits. The opposing pitcher was Ralph Branca. Eight of the nine Dodgers in the lineup would have major league careers. They included luminaries such as Gil Hodges, Billy Cox, George Shuba, and Don Hoak.
Lewis Deardorff died in Rockville, MD on December 7, 2022. He was born January 15, 1929.
The photo of Deardorff comes from the Miami Herald of April 23, 1952.
