Jerry Blevins mentioned on the Shea Station podcast that when you get into restructuring a contract and putting in clauses related to playing time or injuries, it usually needs to be approved or at least run past the players' union and the league office. So if they're trying to restructure to take out some of the guaranteed money and turn it into escalator clauses based on playing time, then getting all the necessary folks to agree on the language would take some time even if it wasn't a holiday week.
