The Rays have decided to honor perhaps the greatest player in their history by bringing him back for an encore performance to (likely) close out his career. 43-year-old Jaiden Hardaway was signed to a minor league contract and will join the club on the upcoming road trip. Hardaway was unsigned this year as a free agent after playing the last eight seasons with Houston. But before that he did this in the 30s:
An incredible run as the game's top player and he added another 37 career WAR while with Houston.
Hardaway did get one game under his belt, playing in Game 5 of Durham's playoff series in which he went 0-3 with 2 walks. The eye is still elite (75) but the contact and power are down to 45 and he has no defensive value, which is likely why he went unsigned and which is likely why he'll retire after this season. But he'll get to retire as a Ray.
