September 24-26, 2049: at Baltimore (3)

Game 1: The usual suspects with the bats were at it again today as the Rays routed the Orioles 11-5 at Camden Yards. 5-time MVP Luis Barela belted a pair of homers (#33 & 34), likely 2049 MVP Jon Morales unloaded a grand slam (#47), Mario Saro had a 2-run shot (#27) and Alex Duran went yard (#31). Melvin Delgado (8-4) wasn't great but 6 9 4 4 1 3 was good enough for the win today while Steve Morris went the final 3 innings for his 1st save.

September 25: Optioned IF/OF Tony Olivo to AAA Durham, purchased the contract of 1B Jaiden Hardaway from the Bulls.

See the previous post.

Game 2: And then it was like someone turned a spigot and the Rays offense was completely shut off in a 1-0 loss, a game in which they managed a 7th-inning Mario Saro double as their only hit. Brad Mabe (4-2) kept his great run of pitching going but was the hard-luck loser when he allowed a 7th-inning homer and finished 7.2 4 1 1 3 2. Jaiden Hardaway made his return to the Rays lineup for the first time in 9 years and was 0-4.

Game 3: The Rays took the series from Baltimore with a 5-3 win in the finale. Jaiden Hardaway was 2-4 with a double, walk and 2 runs scored from the leadoff spot like it was back in the day, and although he likely won't reach the mark, the two hits left him 30 short of 3000. Tomas Laboy (#10) and Chris Parham (#7) homered and Jon Morales had a 2-run single to move within one RBI of teammate Luis Barela for the MLB lead with 129. That makes it 26 RBI in the last 7 games (!) for the rookie. Bob Riley (16-7) was outstanding at 7 4 0 0 1 5 and after the bullpen gave up 3 runs in the 8th Steve Falcon ended the nonsense with a clean 9th for save #39.

Team record: 110-45. Next up: 3 games in Boston.

Playoff race update: In the AL the Rays, White Sox and Astros will win their divisions. The wild card race is wide open with the Angels a game up on the Twins, who are 1/2 game up on the Tigers and 1 on the Yankees. Only two will make it. In the NL the Cubs have clinched the Central and the Rockies are 3 up on the Giants but the Phillies lead the Nationals by only 1 1/2. The Giants are 5 up on the Dodgers in the wild card so they will host, but LA is only up 1 1/2 on Washington and 3 on St. Louis.
