May 7-9, 2032: at Houston (3)

A good weekend for the Rays as they took 2 of 3 in Houston while the Yankees finally came down to Earth, losing three straight including on our Monday off-day to fall back behind 1 1/2 games.

But it didn't start off well for Tampa Bay as they were dominated 7-0 by Chad Weeks and the Astros. The lefty held them to 7 2 0 0 2 9 and those two hits were all they managed. Joe Marlette (4-1) suffered his first loss as he didn't pitch that well at 5 6 5 5 3 7 with the last two of his runs against courtesy of a bases-clearing double Jon Post allowed to former Ray Victor Robles.

The Rays got back in the win column with a 4-1 triumph over Houston behind a fine outing from Kevin DiCostanzo. He went to 3-0 with an AL-best 1.96 ERA thanks to a 7 3 1 1 1 3 outing with Josh Scanlon saving again for #12. It was a two-man offense which accounted for the runs with Orlando Tosado belting a 3-run homer in the 4th (#5) to break a 1-1 tie as part of a 3-hit game while Nate Strickland's solo shot in the 2nd (#2) was one of the rookie's 3 hits on the day.

Wes Mendes turned in his second straight quality start in an up-and-down year for him as the Rays took the series with another 4-1 win over the Astros. Mendes (3-2) was 6 2 1 1 3 3 and once again Josh Scanlon saved (#13). Like yesterday a couple of homers proved huge with Arturo Gutierrez getting them on the board in the 3rd with HR #6 and Joshua Baez providing the big hit in the 5th with a 2-run blast (#5).

Team record: 24-9
. Next up: An off-day then 3 in Kansas City.
