Games 63-65: Baltimore Orioles vs. Boston Americans
The final series prior to the All-Star break, the Boston Americans welcomed the Baltimore Orioles for a 3-game match-up. It has been a fun 1st-half of the season and very happy with how the team has played. While I am always mindful of potential roster changes, I don't anticipate any major shakeups.
Game 63: A very nice outing for Noodles Hahn as he led the Americans (38-25) to a 5 to 0 victory over the Orioles (27-36). Hahn (11-6) scattered 7 hits, allowed 2 walks, and struck out 9 on his way to the shutout win (Game Score of 80). Ed Doheny (4-6) was on the losing side of things, giving up 5 runs (3 earned) on 11 hits and 2 walks to finish with a Game Score of 48. It is interesting that despite a combined 18 hits on the day, there were no extra-base hits. The Boston hitting attack was led by John Farrell (3 for 4, 2 RBI), Fred Clarke (2 for 4, 1 Run, 1 RBI), and Bill Lange (2 for 4, 2 Runs)
Player of the Game: Noodles Hahn (Season: #11 / Career: #11)
Game 64: Bouncing back from the previous day's shutout, the Orioles (28-36) jumped out to a quick lead and never looked back, as they topped the Americans (38-26) by a score of 6 to 3. Ted Lewis (7-7) stymied the home team, allowing 3 runs (2 earned) on just 4 hits and 2 walks to finish with a Game Score of 73. Jesse Tannehill (10-6) was roughed up today, allowing 6 runs (3 earned) on 11 hits and 2 walks; Game Score of 51. Boston 3rd-baseman Jesse Hoffmeister was the lone bright spot, going 1 for 3 with 2 Runs and 1 Walk. The Orioles were led by Jesse Burkett (2 for 4, Triple, 3 Runs, 1 Walk) and Harry Davis (2 for 4, Double, 1 Run, 2 RBI's).
Player of the Game: Ted Lewis
Game 65: A great outing by Cy Young (8-7), as he led Boston (39-26) to a 1 to 0 victory of the Orioles (28-37). Young scattered 8 hits and issued 1 walk on his way to a Game Score of 72. Baltimore pitcher Christy Mathewson (5-12) took the hard luck loss, allowing 1 earned un on 4 hits and 2 walks to finish with a Game Score of 70. There was nothing of significance to not from the offense side of things, as this was a pitcher's duel.
Player of the Game: Cy Young (Season: #7 / Career: #7)
