May 17-19, 2032: vs Miami (3)
A great series for the Rays as they swept their neighbors to the south and allowed a mere two runs in the process. But they gained exactly zero ground as those %&$! Yankees swept their series as well against Washington so Tampa Bay remains behind on percentage points.
Transaction: Frankely Guzman went on the 60-day IL and Jon Post was called back up from Durham.
The opener was a rout of epic proportions as the Rays manhandled the Marlins 17-1. An 8-run 4th inning set the game ablaze keyed by an Arturo Gutierrez grand slam (#10). Arturo was one of seven Rays to homer; the other six were Wander Franco (#3), Jonathan Gutierrez (#6), Orlando Tosado (#7), Diego Cartaya (#2), Cristian Hernandez (#7) and Chris Gutierrez (#2). I think I can safely say with Arturo, Jonathan and Chris all going deep this was the first time in MLB history a team had 3 players named Gutierrez homer, perhaps the first time any 3 Gutierrezes (Gutierrei?) homered in the same game. Christian Little had a rough first inning, allowing a run and having another man thrown out at the plate, but settled in to improve to 2-2 by going 5 3 1 1 3 6.
Runs were much tougher to come by in the second game but the Rays got more of them in a 3-1 win. Joe Marlette (3-1) was his usual excellent self at 6 5 1 1 3 6 and Josh Scanlon survived loading the bases in the 9th for save #15. Nobody on offense stood out with the three runs coming on a single, sac fly and bases-loaded HBP.
And scoring was at even more of a premium in the finale as Jonathan Gutierrez's 2nd-inning homer (#7) stood up as the game's only run in a 1-0 Rays win. Kevin DiCostanzo (4-1) pitched his best game of the year at 7 3 0 0 2 9 and Mike Moore was so efficient in the 8th that he pitched the 9th with Scanlon tired, fanning 4 over 2 innings and earning his first save of the year.
Team record: 30-12, which is somehow not good enough for first place. Next up: An off-day then more interleague action with Atlanta visiting for 3.
