If you have historical editing turned on and the playoff changes option off, this will happen because the NHL goes from the two-division setup to two-conference, four-division in 1974-75, but the playoff system needs the old league structure to work. Go the the league edit screen (Rules tab) for the NHL and change the playoff system to "12 Teams, 3 per Div" (which was the actual system in use that year) and you'll be able to continue.
