Also, by 1963, Shea Stadium was (literally) looming on the horizon (in Queens). Indeed, the Mets were supposed to have been there for '63, but construction delays pushed the move back a year. And you didn't need to have Jay Hook's M.S. in Engineering from Northwestern to know that Big Shea was going to be a bit more difficult for dingers than the Polo Grounds.

(Unless your name was Wilver Dornel Stargell, that is. But the Pirates weren't dealing him.)

So it made sense for Case to give the proto-DH types the golden toe, I'd say.
