June 30-July 1, 2032: at Toronto (2)

Thanks to another bullpen letdown we ended up splitting the two games in Toronto and the Yankees did likewise in Minnesota so the lead remains 4 games.

A pair of solo homers from Cristian Hernandez (#s 15 & 16) and a 3-run shot from Kelly Crumpton (#26) gave the Rays a 5-1 lead, but the pen couldn't hold it and the Jays came back to take a walk-off 6-5 win in the bottom of the 9th. Wes Mendes turned in a solid start (5 4 2 2 2 6) but Tommy Burpee started the collapse in the 8th by giving up still another homer, a 2-run shot to Vlad Jr., Mike Moore gave up a solo shot later in the inning to let Toronto tie, and Cody Adcock (1-1) couldn't survive a 2-base Chris Gutierrez error in the 9th.

The Rays continued to bash the ball in the second game and four more homers brought them a 9-2 win over the Jays. Kelly Crumpton picked up where he left off yesterday by blasting a 2-run homer in the 1st and then added a solo shot to give him 28, Arturo Gutierrez blasted #20, and Wander Franco put the game away with a 3-run jack (#9) to cap a 4-run 9th. This was all plenty for Joe Marlette (11-3), who went 6 4 2 0 0 0 9 in the win. The lefty now leads the AL in strikeouts with 133 in only 97 IP.

Team record: 54-26. Next up: 3 games in Baltimore.
