I don't think there's any filters being applied by default, but there's no way for me to be sure since I can't even get into the menu.

You can know if there are currently filters if the default button says "Filter: None" vs "Filter: Custom". If you do have a filter applied, I would suggest to try to clear it - it could be that something in that temporary filter is breaking.
If that's still not working, there may be a problem with some stored data. There's a couple options on how to fix, depending a little bit on how much customization you tend to run.
One option is you could load a game in non-PT mode, go to the similar place, and go add a bunch of filters for normal, common columns (ie. player name, batting contact rating, etc...). Basically, we internally store a list of recent filters, so if there's something on one of those filters causing trouble somehow, this will basically fill the cache with items and hopefully drop the problem one.
Now, that arguably won't work. Or if you don't have a super amount of customization, you can do the following:
Go to Main->Settings->Troubleshooting
Click on the "Open folder containing app.cfg&engine.cfg"
Close your game
Rename the user.dat file to something else (ie. user_backup.dat)
Re-open your game.
This will reset all your "local" customizations, and hopefully should correct the issue.
