Anatomy Volume 1, 1985: Game 36 of 162

May 20, 1985: Boston Red Sox (19-16) @ Minnesota Twins (20-16)

And so we pay our first visit for the year to my least favourite ballpark – not just now, but of all time. To me, the Metrodome doesn’t have one redeeming feature other than the fact that it is climate controlled in the later months of the season. Aside from that, it is a hellish place for me to play at. The artificial turf somehow manages to be harder on your knees because of its lack of give and harder on your ankles because of its lack of stability underfoot. Its slickness and propensity for heavy topspin shows me up on defence and costs me any chance of legging out infield hits. The white dome makes pop flies nightmarish occurrences and those rags they wave would distract a blind man at bat. Plus, I almost invariably pick up a niggle here. Last season – my first and only experience here so far – saw me wrench my knee, strain my Achilles and even somehow dislocate a finger. And the burns when you slide. Dear Lord.

Anyhow, enough with the whining Billy - time to Buck Up! We face the in-form John Butcher in this opening game of three. He’s 5-0 with a sparkling 2.08 ERA entering this game, so we’ll have our hands full. I went 3-for-8 against him in our three meetings last year… well, more precisely, I went 3-for-3 in our first meeting and ohfer the other two. I do remember he has a real heavy sinker but can leave it a little high at times. I’ll be sitting on that one tonight, for sure. Al Nipper going for us and Mack has me batting clean-up in this one. I'm not bothered, variety is the spice of life!

Game Recap

Boggsy puts us ahead in the 3rd with a run-scoring double and Tony Armas doubles our lead in the next with a solo big fly. Nips has looked strong to this point but they come alive and get to him in the home 4th, tying it on a Hrbek solo shot and a sac fly after he walks the bases full. In fact, we’re lucky to still be level as they leave a couple on the deck.

That spurs our bats into a full-on assault, as we chase Butcher with 5 runs on 6 hits in the next. We tack on 2 more in the 7th and cruise to a 9-2 win. I finish the game 2-for-5 but have little impact, with Armas' 3 hits and 3 ribbies making him the big dog tonight.
