Games 114-116: Philadelphia Athletics vs. Boston Americans

The Americans welcomed the Philadelphia Athletics into the Bay State for a 3-game series that was crucial for Boston to do well in. Taking 2 of 3 games was nice but not enough to make the critical move towards the top.

Game 114: What a game by Noodles Hahn (19-12), as he allowed just 2 hits and 1 run (0 earned) to lead Boston (67-47) to a 3 to1 victory over the Athletics (43-71). In picking up the win, Hahn struck out 6 while tossing just 92 pitches for a Game Score of 87. Philadelphia pitcher Earl Moore (5-23) pitched decent in the loss, allowing 3 runs (2 earned) while giving up 9 hits and 2 walks for a Game Score of 55. The Americans were led by Win Mercer (2 for 4, Triple, 1 RBI), Bill Lange (2 for 4, 1 Run, 1 RBI, 1 Stolen Base), and Ossee Schreckengost (2 for 2, 1 Run, 1 Walk).

Game 115: What an effort by both starting pitchers, as they continued to face batters into the 13th inning. When it was all said and done, the Athletics (44-71) topped the Americans (67-48) by a score of 5 to 3. Philadelphia pitcher Mal Eason (13-8) picked up the win by tossing 193 pitches over 12 1/3 innings in which he allowed 3 earned runs on 11 hits and 2 walks for a Game Score of 72. Closer Bill Reidy got the final 2 outs to earn his 5th save of the season. Boston pitcher Jesse Tannehill (18-10) took the loss after allowing 5 runs (3 earned) over 13 innings in which he threw an astounding 212 pitches for a Game Score of 66. Mike Kelley (2 for 5, 2 Doubles, 2 RBIs), George Magoon (3 for 5, Double, 2 Runs), and Tom McCreery (2 for 5, 2 Runs, 1 Walk) led the offense punch for the winning team. Jesse Hoffmeister (3 for 4, Double, 3 RBIs), Bill Lange (3 for 7, 2 Runs), and Sport McAllister (2 for 2) played well in the loss.

Game 116: Boston needed a big outing from starting pitcher Cy Young and they got just that. Young (16-12) allowed 1 run (0 earned) on 8 hits for a Game Score of 72 to lead the Americans (68-48) to a 4 to 1 victory over the Athletics (44-72).
