Games 117-119: Philadelphia Athletics vs. Boston Americans

Game 117: The Boston Americans (69-48) squared off against the Washington Senators (65-52) in a battle to gain ground in the American League pennant race. Behind the solid pitching of Fred Klobedanz, the Americans were able to mount a late-game rally off of All-Star pitcher Rube Waddell to pull out a 3 to 2 victory. Klobedanz (16-12) gave up 2 runs on 6 hits and a walk to finish with a Game Score of 68. The Boston offense was led by Fred Clarke (2 for 5, RBI) and Win Mercer (2 for 4, Walk). In the loss, Waddell (22-12) allowed 3 runs (1 earned) on 9 hits and 2 walks, striking out 14 batters (WOW!) for a Game Score of 73. Jack Doyle (2 for 4, 1 Run) played well in the loss.

Player of the Game: Fred Klobedanz (Season: #11 / Career: #11)


Game 118: There was no better time for Noodles Hahn to demonstrate why he is among the top pitchers in all of baseball. Scattering 8 hits and 3 walks, Hahn (20-12) gave up just 1 earned run while striking out a franchise record 13 batters (Game Score of 77) to lead Boston (70-48) to a 4 to 1 victory over the Senators (65-53). John Farrell (3 for 4, 2 Doubles, 2 Runs, 1 RBI), Jesse Hoffmeister (2 for 4, Double, 1 Run), and Kid Elberfeld (1 for 4, Double, 1 RBI) had a solid day at the plate. Casey Patten (15-12) took the loss after allowing 4 earned runs on 10 hits and 2 walks; Game Score of 51. Doc Casey's efforts (2 for 5, Double, 1 RBI) did not translate into a win for his team.

Player of the Game: Noodles Hahn (Season: #21 / Career: #21)


Game 119: The Washington Senators (66-53) refused to be swept by the Boston Americans (70-49), as they rode the pitching of Jack Chesbro to a 3 to 1 win. Chesbro (14-12) allowed 1 run (0 earned) on 6 hits and 3 walks to finish with a Game Score of 76. Jack Doyle (3 for 4, Double, Triple, 2 Runs) and Wille Keeler (2 for 4, 1 RBI) powered the offense. Taking the loss for the Americans was Jesse Tannehill (18-11) who allowed 3 earned runs on 9 hits and 1 walk; Game Score of 51.
