After a rough 13-15 August, we hit September with a 1/2 game lead over the A's. 29 games left, all against division teams. Our next three are against the A's and our last three are against the A's. The A's lost Nolan Ryan for a month, and that is a huge positive for me because he dominated us in the 1 game he started against us.
We are 100% healthy going into the stretch drive and Reggie Smith has a shot at MVP and Roy Howell the ROY. More importantly, we have to beat the A's.
When the year started I was set to let our captain, 34-year old SS Jim Fregosi, walk into free agency. His range is going and struggled a bit at the plate last year. But this year he is .294/.364/.391 leading all AL SS in BA, RBI and OPS. He wanted 3 years and I tried for months to get him to sign for 2 years with an club option......then 2 years with a player option.....but he was the most stubborn signing I've ever had. I consider it a win that I got him down from $340,000 a year down to $320,000 and under $1,000,000 in total value over 3 years. I have no decent SS prospects and there are no UFA's next year even close to him. So I bit the bullet and opened the wallet
