August 15-17, 2050: at Oklahoma City (3)
Game 1: The Rays jumped out to an 8-2 lead before holding on to take an 8-6 win over Oklahoma City at Sunbirdsdome. Jon Morales led the charge with 3 hits, including a pair of 2-run homers to give him 26 on the year and Beau Bonczek added a 2-run shot of his own (#24). Rex Bransington (4-0) made it 4 wins in 4 Rays starts and cruised through the first 3 before barely making it through five at 5 5 4 4 2 6. Several relievers led to Steve Talbott, who had a scoreless 9th for save #20.
Game 2: Tampa Bay had an easier time of it in the second game with a 7-3 win over the Sunbirds. Alvaro Alejandre's 3-run homer (#3) and Mario Saro's solo shot (#32) made it 5-0 in the 2nd while Ruben Ramirez's 2-run double in the 8th provided needed insurance. Alec McInerney (5-1) picked up the win after going 5 5 2 1 4 4.
Game 3: The Rays couldn't complete the sweep as the Sunbirds scored twice in the 8th to send Tampa Bay to a 6-4 loss. Oklahoma City took a 4-1 lead in the 4th, getting all their runs off Nicola Grieco who finished 5 5 4 4 2 4 before the Rays climbed back to tie it up including solo homers from Luis Barela (#39) and Juan Viatoro (#17). But Mike Bertram (2-3) and Mel Mejia combined to allow those two runs in the 8th and the bats went down meekly in the 9th.
Team record: 74-48. Progress though as the Yankees split 4 games over this series and the ensuing off-day, so the division deficit is down to 2 games. Next up: Back home for 3 against Oakland after the day off.
