Another way to do this is
1. Create which year is your base, say 1977. Set that league up in full. Save, maybe back it up.
2. Go to league Settings - create new league - historical 1947.
Then if you want to you can delete the 1947 league which will release all players & coaches then either manually assign them or let their be a bidding war.

Another option is create 2 separate leagues 1977 and 1947 and save the 1947 as a template and add it to your 1977 league.
