May 3-5, 2033: vs Oakland (3)
Despite our pitching being torched for 21 runs in the 3-game series we still managed to take 2 of 3 thanks to the bats.
Shane Panzini couldn't hold a 5-1 lead and the A's went ahead in the top of the 10th inning, but Billy Carlow's 2-run homer in the bottom of the inning (his second of the day) gave the Rays a 7-6 walk-off win over Oakland. Solo homers by Kelly Crumpton (#4) and Carlow (#12) along with a 3-run William Contreras shot (#1) gave them that 5-1 lead but Panzini showed his previous dominant outing was more of a fluke by going 5.1 7 5 5 3 9 with a pair of homers allowed. Mike Moore (3-0) gave up a solo homer in the 10th but became the winner when Carlow blasted his MLB-best 13th for the victory.
The Rays walked it off yet again in even more dramatic fashion in the second game, scoring 4 times in the bottom of the 9th to tie the game at 7 and then winning it in the 10th on Kelly Crumpton's solo homer (#5). They had already pushed across a run in the 9th when Arturo Gutierrez came through in the clutch with two out as he blasted a 3-run homer (#6) deep into the LF stands. Earlier Nate Strickland had a 2-run jack, his 9th. The pitching of course was another story. Danny Morales wasn't terrible, but the rookie wasn't great either at 6.1 8 5 4 1 8 and then the pen gave up a couple of runs to make it look out of reach before the 9th-inning heroics. Josh Scanlon (1-1) had a 1-2-3 10th for the win.
There was no stirring walk-off win or comeback in the finale, just more bad Rays starting pitching as Oakland walloped them 8-2. Today it was Wes Mendes (1-4) who struggled again at 4.2 7 6 5 4 5 and saw his ERA balloon to 7.33. The only highlight of the day was a 2-run Arturo Gutierrez homer (#7) in the 2nd.
Team record: 20-9. Next up: Detroit visits for 3 games.
