Newspapers.com comes to the rescue again. Non-roster players reported in the papers were pitchers Rick Camp, Gary Melson, Blane McDonald, and Dan Morogiello (who was eventually put on the roster), catchers Harry Saferight, Matt Sinatro, and Larry Owen, and infielders Bob Beall, Chico Ruiz, and Mike Miller. Camp and Ruiz played for the Braves in 1980 and the others didn't, though Bob Beall did get a cup of mocha java with the Pirates that year.
The invitation of three non-roster catchers that spring is noteworthy because the Braves already had Joe Nolan, Biff Pocoroba, Bill Nahorodny, Bruce Benedict, and Dale Murphy on the roster. Nolan wasn't much with the glove, Benedict was still young and inexperienced, Pocoroba was recovering from an arm operation, Murphy was better suited to other positions, and Nahorodny had never played regularly in the big leagues.
