Handling big saves

(Maybe I should have named the thread "Handling big SAVE FILES", my bad, should have known better than to just throw "saves" around on a baseball forum :P)

Hi. I've noticed that all the files/images/etc in a single save file, once the save has gotten a few decades into the simulation, can grow to a size that's a bit hard to handle on my 500GB hard drive.
Do y'all have any tips, ideas, whatever for dealing with saves when they get too large to handle? Is the best option to just compress the save files as much as possible once the savefile has been played to completion/desire?

I do use the almanac feature, and I'm aware that can add quite the extra size to savefiles, so is the best option just ditching that?
