Home Field Advantage: Barnes, Boston Open World Championship Series with Win
The Boston Red Stockings started the World Championship Series in style today, downing the visiting Baltimore Canaries at South End Grounds I by a score of 15-5 to grab an early 1-0 lead in the best-of-7 series. Red Stockings second baseman Ross Barnes went 2 for 5 with a double and a walk, while scoring 2 and driving in 3.

The Red Stockings benefited from a costly error in the bottom of the first. With Al Spalding at bat and Boston leading 3-1, the Baltimore miscue allowed Boston to plate 2 and take the lead, 5-1.

"Things broke our way today and that's great," Red Stockings manager Harry Wright said. "It's important, though, to stay focused and not pat yourself on the back too much. We aren't done yet."

The next game is set to be played tomorrow at South End Grounds I in Boston.

Red Stockings Beat Canaries in World Championship Series
It's party time in Boston. The confetti is flying and residents are smiling.

The Boston Red Stockings have reached the mountaintop, capturing the 1873 World Championship Series today. They defeated the Baltimore Canaries 11-0 at South End Grounds I to officially wrap up the series 4-2.

Asked how it feels to be champion, catcher Deacon White was to the point.

"It feels great, like a million bucks. I'm so happy right now, not just for me but for all the guys," he said. "We put a lot of work into this and deserve to be champions."

The team is planning a victory parade and fan appreciation day later in the week. Boston finished the regular season 41-19 and claimed first place in the National Association.
