May 29-31, 2031: at Cincinnati (3)

Game 1: A rare low-scoring Rays game that saw them come out on top 3-1. Steve Morris (6-2) might have pitched his best game of the year at 5 3 1 1 1 6 and the bullpen was lights-out with four different relievers throwing a scoreless inning apiece with Steve Talbott taking the 9th for save #17. RBI singles in the 3rd from Nesty de la Rosa, David Morales, and Jon McGovern, each of whom were in the minors last year, accounted for all of the offense.

Game 2: The Rays' bats were stifled and Jimmy Bernal suffered his first loss in a Tampa Bay uniform as the Reds handled them 6-1. Bernal (5-1) did not have it tonight, going 4 9 6 6 1 1, and neither did his teammates who only managed three hits on the night.

Game 3: Tampa Bay took the rubber game 9-6, scoring early and often and overcoming a poor Dave Rose start. Beau Bonczek led the charge, going 4-4 with HR #16 and 3 RBI, Jon Morales had a 2-run homer (#11) and Luis Barela broke a 6-6 tie in the 5th with a 2-run shot of his own (#19). Rose got his strikeouts but was too hittable otherwise, going 4.1 8 6 6 2 8. Mel Mejia led another great performance from the bullpen, going 1 2/3 scoreless to improve to 3-0 and Steve Kay hurled a 1-2-3 9th for save #4.

Team record: 43-13. Next up: 4 games in New York against the Yankees, who also took 2 out of 3 to remain 4 1/2 back.
