If he DID cancel it, then then best he could get would likely be about 3 million a year. Seriously..his production is THAT bad.
If the Tigers offer to buy out his contract, it would have to be close to full value...perhaps 75%. This is still a VAST amount of money.

Don't underestimate the ego of some players. From his lack of caring and willingness to make adjustments, Baez may be one of those players. With that said, benching a player with a huge ego can have a major effect to a point where a player may opt out because they think they're that good (a starter, etc.). Of course there could be public relations problems unless Baez's attitude changes; however, I think this is the only hope Detroit has to get him to opt out. The team can take steps to drive him to opt out through benching, disciplinary action, etc. from on field performance. That'll keep the MLBPA quiet.
Along the same lines, did y'all hear his excuses for his mistakes in the game against Toronto? The guy is clueless:
"My mind is everywhere right now. I'm just trying to focus on my hitting and my timing. The only reason I lost the count of the outs, it was because I was hitting sixth. I thought I was the third batter in that inning. That's the only reason."
Are you serious?!?!
