The Cubs used a 7-run 4th inning to win the opening game of the series. Seth Beer, the former Pirate, went 4-5 with 4 singles and drove in 2 runs to lead the Cubs. First baseman Walton Boutillier drove in 5 runs, including a grand slam in the bottom of the 4th.

Masayoshi Oshima went 3-4 to lead the Pirates to the win. Trailing 2-1 in the top of the 6th inning Oshima blasted a 2-run home run, his 4th home run of the season, to make it 3-2. Oshima drove in 4 runs on the day. Manuel Beltre had his 1st major league hit, a single in the 7th.
