Cards news: Jan. 24 -- Deal with Royals acquires OF Riley Greene for two relievers

The St. Louis Cardinals have acquired 25-year-old outfielder Riley Greene from the Kansas City Royals in exchange for right-handed relief pitchers Bryan Baker and Nick Maldonaldo.
Greene, 25, was drafted by the Detroit Tigers in the first round (fifth overall) of the 2019 draft and made the majors in 2022.
In 382 games with Detroit, Greene hit .260 with 25 home runs and 157 RBIs.
Traded to Kansas City before the 2025 season, Greene was limited to 80 games because of a rib cage injury.
In those games, he hit .260 with eight homers and 27 RBIs.
Baker, 31, has been with the Cardinals organization since the 2023 season bouncing back and forth between the majors in AAA Memphis.
He spent almost all of the 2025 season with the AAA Redbirds, getting into 25 games during which he was 4-3 with four saves and a 7.88 ERA.
In 19 games with the Cardinals, Baker was 1-1 with one save in a 4.58 ERA.
For his major-league career, which includes time with Baltimore and Toronto, Baker has worked in 178 games and gone 13-7 with three saves and a 3.23 ERA.
Maldonado, 25, was selected by the Cardinals in the 14th round of the 2023 draft.
He has never pitched above AA.
At Springfield last season, he worked in 34 games going 5-5 with five saves and 4.34 ERA.
