March 1, 1957 - Snapshot
Here is a snapshot of the Leagues, with a few highlights thus far:
- With just over three weeks left in the season, there’s little drama in either wild card chase to speak of. The only drama in fact is whether the red-hot Brunswick Legends can overtake the Cobourg Redlegs for first place in the East. Riding a 12-game winning streak, the Legends have pulled to within just a half a game of the Redlegs. Cobourg does have a game in hand on Brunswick and will host the Legends four more times in the final week of the season. Those four games are now looming large.
- There is currently a two-way tie for the home run lead. Wellington Athletics’ Matthew Floyd and Cambria Cannons’ Sam Tite both have 43, just two shy of the season record of 45. That mark was originally set by Cobourg’s Raymond Williams back in the 1953-54 season. The question is – can one of them reach 50? Of the two, Tite would seem the most likely. While Floyd hit 35 home runs from October to December, he has hit only eight since then. Tite meanwhile, has been a little more consistent from month-to-month, although he ‘only’ hit six in February, his lowest monthly total. If one of them does manage to reach 50 they will have to get on a tear to do it, as each player has just 22 games left to hit seven more home runs.
- Finally, the end of the season reports will highlight the 14th player in United Leagues’ history to reach the 200 career home run mark.
