3B Preston Ballard has been placed on the 10-day injured list. While his knee tendinitis only takes about 5 days to recover, he could use the rest while he heals. He will likely only stay the minimum time on the IL and won't need to go on a rehab assignment.

SS Alvaro Gonzalez (3.5, 3.5) has been recalled from AAA Irving to take Ballard's place.

In other news, SP Joe Schwei (3.0, 3.0) has been traded from the Pittsburgh Pirates to the Norfolk Tides. Schwei had spent all eight years with the Pirates thus far, compiling a record of 74-75 in 241 starts, an ERA of 3.55, and a WAR of 29.9. This is a heartbreaking trade for Pittsburgh, who has been reeling for a few years now. Schwei was part of Pittsburgh's "Fearsome Four" consisting of him, 2024 Cy Young Winner Xavier DeMent (3.0, 3.0), Manuel Lopez (3.0, 3.0), and Wil Martinez (2.5, 2.5). Martinez is now the only pitcher of the group left on the Pirates.
