Game 67: Boston Americans vs. Philadelphia Athletics
Normally having a late-inning 3 run lead and ace Noodles Hahn on the mound results in a victory for the Americans. But this is why they play the game, because it only takes just one bounce, bloop, miscue, etc... for the tide to turn. Heading into the bottom of the 8th inning, Hahn had limited the Athletics to 5 harmless hits and appeared to be cruising to a shutout victory. But back-to-back-to-back doubles, coupled to two untimely walks, put Philadelphia (26-41) ahead and they would take the game from Boston (49-18) by a score of 4 to 3.
Button Briggs (7-11) pitched well in the victory, allowing 3 runs (1 earned) on 8 hits and 3 walks; Game Score of 62. Noodles Hahn (11-6) was tagged with the loss after allowing 4 earned runs on 11 hits and 2 walks; Game Score of 46. The Athletics offense came from Honus Wagner (2 for 3, Double, 1 Run, 1 RBI, 1 Walk), Tom McCreery (2 for 4, Double, 1 Run, 1 RBI), and Fred Hartman (2 for 4, 1 Run), while Boston was helped by John Farrell (2 for 4, 2 RBIs), Frank Chance (2 for 4, 1 Run), and Fred Clarke (2 for 4, 1 Run).
Player of the Game: Button Briggs
