MLB news: Sept. 16 -- Blue Jays are first AL team to clinch playoff berth
Despite losing 9-7 to the Texas Rangers, the Toronto Blue Jays still became the first team to secure a berth in the American League playoffs.
At 88-58, the Jays own an 11-game lead over the Boston Red Sox in the American League East Division with 16 games left in the regular season.
Toronto's record has it one game in front of the Los Angeles Angels for the best record in the AL.
The postseason berth is the third in a row for the Jays.
Toronto has made the playoffs five times in the last seven years.
The Jays have just two World Series appearances, taking the title in both 1992 and 93.
