September 15-17, 2034: vs Minnesota (3)

The magic number to clinch the AL East is down to 7 after the Rays took 2 of 3 from the Twins at Tropicana Field.

Transaction: Orlando Tosado went on the IL with hamstring tendinitis and the contract of OF Kevin Alcantara was purchased from Durham. Alcantara, the one-time Yankees and Cubs prospect, had a few part-time seasons in Memphis before my AI minor-league GM signed him to a AAA deal. He was hitting an impressive 348/382/596 for the Bulls with 12 HR and 31 RBI in 54 games.

Tampa Bay routed Minnesota 10-2 in the opener with the big blows a 3-run homer from Arturo Gutierrez (#37) and a 2-run shot from Danny Arroyave (#35). Danny Morales improved to 17-5 after a solid 6 5 1 1 2 3 outing.

It was another torching of the Twins in the second game as the Rays obliterated them 14-0. Danny Charlton was 3-5 with a 2-run double and a 3-run homer (#12/21) and Arturo Gutierrez's grand slam (#38) started the onslaught. Kevin DiCostanzo's brilliant run of form continued as he went 6 1 0 0 1 5 to up his record to 6-2 and give him only 1 run allowed over his last 4 starts covering 25 1/3 IP.

The Rays jumped out to an early 3-1 lead in the finale and it looked like more of the same but the Twins hit a couple of 2-run homers off Chris Ferguson to go ahead and took a 6-4 win. Tampa Bay loaded the bases with nobody out in the bottom of the 9th but couldn't get anyone home. Ferguson (14-7) was 6.2 9 6 5 0 5 in the loss, which can't be pinned on Danny Arroyave who was 3-5 with HR #36 and 2 RBI.

Team record: 96-53. Next up: Toronto comes to the Trop for 3 and a sweep would see us reduce the magic number to 1.
