Trevor Linden announces coaching staff
A lot was shuffled around on the personnel side of things over the off-season as new GM Trevor Linden formed a vision for the Canucks organization and then began shaping his coaching staff. A lot of people were let go, but Assistant GM and Capologist
Laurence Gilman agreed to stay on, and Head Scout
Judd Brackett remained in his position for now.
After a lengthy interview process, Trevor chose
Dale Hunter of the London Knights to be the next Head Coach of the Vancouver Canucks. Dale had an illustrious career in the NHL, playing in over 1,400 games and racking up 1,020 points and 3,565 PIM. He is part-owner of the London Knights, whom he has spent much of the past decade coaching, winning the memorial cup in 04-05. His most recent NHL experience was coaching the Capitals in 11-12, leading them to the second round before losing in 7 to the Rangers. He returned to his beloved Knights in 12-13 to coach them to OHL championship. Last season they were ousted from the OHL playoffs in the second round, but competed in the Memorial Cup as the Hosts. They finished last in the round robin of that tournament. He is considered to be good with coaching and developing younger players, and prefers a physical brand of hockey.
Former Pittsburgh bench boss
Dan Bylsma was hired as an assistant coach. He won the Stanley Cup as head coach of the Pens in 2009, and won the Jack Adams in 10-11 after leading Pittsburgh to a 49 win, 106 point season. His experience with superstars like Crosby, Malkin and Letang should lend itself to communicating and working with the Sedins. Apart from being Hunter's right hand man, he is also expected to focus on coaching the blueline.
Former NHL star
Adam Oates was hired to coach the forwards. Oates is used by multiple players in the league as a skills coach and advisor.
After coaching the Vancouver Giants of the WHL for the past decade,
Don Hay was hired as an assistant coach. Hay's most recent NHL experience is coaching the 2000-2001 Calgary Flames. He will focus on skills and physical training.
Former Canuck
Scott Walker was hired and will work together with Oates on the forward group while also working closely with Hunter managing players and staff.
Recently retired
Manny Malhotra will return to the organization in a coaching capacity, working especially with the centers on faceoffs as he acclimates to a coaching role.
Rollie Melanson was retained as the goaltending coach, and
Dan Cloutier was kept on as goaltending consultant and assistant as well.
Ryan Johnson was kept on and will assist Hay with skills and physical training.
Assistant coach
Doug Lidster was kept on to help Bylsma with the defense.
All other assistants remaining from the previous regime were relieved of their duties as Linden and his management team work to reset the team culture, starting with the coaching.
