1965 in APB

The debut season for Austronesia Professional Baseball saw three teams finish the debut season with 100+ wins. In the Taiwan League, it was Taichung leading the way at 104-58, finishing 14 games better than their top competitor Taipei. In the Philippine League, Manila mauled their way to 103-59, 12 games ahead of Quezon. The Manatees were the Association leader in both runs scored (651) and fewest allowed (431).
The first Taiwan-Philippine Association MVP was 30-year old second baseman Ariannis Gatra. Nicknamed “Bulldozer,” the Indonesian lefty was the leader in WAR (9.7), triple slash (.302/.364/.586), OPS (.950), wRC+ (195) and runs (95), adding 35 home runs. The Pitcher of the Year was Taipei’s Perumal Jayaweera. A 28-year old Sri Lankan lefty, he had the best WHIP at 0.71, posting 8.4 WAR over 264.2 innings with a 21-8 record, 1.90 ERA, and 254 strikeouts. He got the nod over teammate Lutfi Irianto, who had him beat in WAR (12.6) and strikeouts (359).

In the Sundaland Association, Pekanbaru had the best overall record in Austronesia Professional Baseball. The Palms were 107-55, finishing 11 games better than Medan. Pekanbaru led in runs scored (615) and fewest allowed (400). They were Malacca League champ, while Depok took the Java League crown. The Demons finished 93-69, eight games ahead of Surabaya.
The Palms had the Association MVP and Pitcher of the Year. The former was 3B Stanley Susilowati, a 26-year old Indonesian righty. He led the Association in WAR (10.7) and runs (95), adding 37 home runs. Susilowati also won Gold Glove, his first of what would end up being eight straight. Top pitcher went to W.C. Yu, a 28-year old Taiwanese righty. Nicknamed “Cactus,” Yu was the leader in WAR (10.6), wins (23-9), strikeouts (330), WHIP (0.75), shutouts (9), and FIP- (49). He had a 2.01 ERA over 277 innings.
The first TPA Championship Series went all seven games with Taichung edging Manila. Pekanbaru topped Depok in six to take the Sundaland Championship. The first Austronesia Championship was highly anticipated, but ultimately was a dud in terms of excitement. The Toucans would sweep the Palms, sending the trophy to Taiwan in the first season. Singaporean 1B J.T. Hong was the playoff star for Taichung, winning the ACS MVP. In 11 playoff games, he had 12 hits, 7 runs, 6 home runs, and 9 RBI.

Other notes: Two perfect games would be thrown in the first APB season. Singapore’s Kiat Lee on April 5 struck out eight in a perfecto against Surabaya. On May 3, Pitcher of the Year Perumal Jayaweera did it with nine strikeouts against Zamboanga. Jayaweera threw a second no-hitter in June against Taipei. Although it is low by other league standards, Brandon Wright’s 122 RBI season would rank second-best all-time in APB until the 2030s.
