World Championship Series Game 1 Victory for Caruthers and St. Louis
The St. Louis Browns started the World Championship Series in style today, downing the visiting Chicago White Stockings at Sportsmans Park by a score of 7-3 to stake an early 1-0 lead in the best-of-7 series. Browns right-hander Bob Caruthers threw 9.0 innings of 8-hit ball.
Tip O'Neill dealt the White Stockings a blow in the bottom of the first. Batting with a runner on 1st and St. Louis leading 1-0, O'Neill, who led the AL in RBI with 82 in 1885, hit a first pitch fastball for a run-scoring triple.
"I'm just looking for a good pitch that I can hit well," said O'Neill. "And not try to do too much."
The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Sportsmans Park in St. Louis.

St. Louis Tops Chicago Again, 5-2
The St. Louis Browns got a strong performance from pitcher Dave Foutz, who stymied the visiting Chicago White Stockings en route to a win, 5-2, in Game 2 of the World Championship Series today. The White Stockings could never get a bead on the right-handed Foutz, who threw 9.0 innings allowing 2 runs. The Browns now hold a 2-0 in the best-of-7 series.
The Browns picked up the win with a combination of good hitting and good pitching.
"Every team in baseball loses," White Stockings manager Cap Anson said. "We're in the playoffs and we still have the same guys that got us here. We'll bounce back."
Game 3 is scheduled for Friday at West Side Park in Chicago.

Anson Blasts Browns, White Stockings Take Game 4, 9-6
Chicago first baseman Cap Anson was the difference-maker for the White Stockings in what turned into a shootout with the St. Louis Browns. Anson earned accolades after going 3-for-5 in the 9-6 White Stockings win. With the victory, the White Stockings moved into a 2-2 tie in the best-of-7 series.
Had Fred Pfeffer not delivered a key base hit in the bottom of the seventh, the outcome might have been different. Instead, with two down and runners on 2nd and 3rd, Pfeffer hit a 2-run single. That made the score 6-5, in favor of the White Stockings.
"We're just feeding off each other right now," said Pfeffer.
The next game is set to be played tomorrow at West Side Park in Chicago.

Chicago White Stockings Win World Championship Series
With a 8-4 win over the St. Louis Browns at Sportsmans Park today, the Chicago White Stockings wrapped up their 6th title in team history.
The White Stockings left little doubt who was the better team. Celebrating a banner year, "team" was the word of the day in the victorious clubhouse after the game.
"Hitting, pitching, fielding; those are all things you need to win, but most importantly you need a team, a team that works together toward the same collective goal," said Chicago manager Cap Anson. "Our players felt that way all year, and they played that way. When one guy had an off day, 24 others stepped up their game and filled the void."
A jovial mood filled the air as Chicago celebrated into the night. The city's mayor said parade plans were underway and a "huge celebration" would be in order.
"I hope they have a big celebration," St. Louis manager Charles Comiskey said. "They deserved to win this series and they deserve to celebrate it."
