The slot the retired player is filling is likely for a player that wasn't yet in the database. An upcoming patch will add such players, so it's being worked on and there are threads in the General Discussions area that Lukas is updating as his work progresses to get all that into the game. It always takes a bit of time and effort to get the info in and all the ratings revised but based on the posts in the other thread, they are diligently working on it.
