Detroit Makes Deal With Brooklyn
In what appears to be a playoff-push effort by the Detroit Tigers, they sent 3rd baseman Andy Oyler to the Brooklyn Superbas in exchange for pitcher Jack Taylor and 3rd baseman Frank Martin. What is interesting about this trade is that it reunites Frank Martin with the Tigers, as he was dealt in the offseason along with Hobe Ferris in return for Stan Yerkes and Ed Abbaticchio. Looking at player ratings, Oyler and Martin is pretty much a wash of low-impact 3rd basemen. The potential gem here is Detroit getting Jack Taylor as they make a strong run at the Boston Americans.
Player stats at the time of trade show Oyler with a Double-A slash of .324/.437/.606 (216 OPS+ and 1.6 WAR) and a Triple-A slash of .246/.326/.332 (99 OPS+ and 0.9 WAR), while Martin has MLB slash of .259/.305/.297 (78 OPS+ and 0.4 WAR) and Taylor has MLB record of 1-0 with 2 saves, 1.76 ERA in 15.1 innings of 11 games.
