Cards news: Closer Pacheco lost for remainder of regular season;
The St. Louis Cardinals have learned that closer Freddy Pacheco will miss the remainder of the regular season after he suffered back spasms following his closing out of a 6-3 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates on August 28.
The save was Pacheco's career-high 33rd of the season.
Pacheco is expected to be out for up to nine weeks.
The 29-year-old had pitched in 43 games in 2027, going 2-2 with the 33 saves and a 1.51 ERA. Pacheco also had two blown saves.
Right-hander Guillermo Zuniga will be recalled from AAA Memphis.
In 54 games with St. Louis this season, Zuniga has gone 3-3 with two saves and a 3.84 ERA.
The 28-year-old worked in two games in Memphis not compiling a record and posting a 0.00 ERA over 1.2 innings.
Kevin Ginkel, who St. Louis acquired in a July 29 trade with Minnesota will move into the closer's role.
Ginkel, 33, has pitched in 34 games since joining the Cardinals going 2-1 with four saves and a 1.98 ERA.
