Slight change of plans. I shopped Eddie Murray around hoping some re-building team would take a chance on a 25 year old who after a good rookie season has been a negative WAR player the last 2 years.
The Tigers are cutting salary and offered their closer, 30 year old Mike Proly, with 2 years and $1.8 million left on his deal. We asked for 20% retention and we got it. Proly is a closer in the tradition of Mike Marshall, he eats innings. In the last 4 years, here are his numbers:
18-9 20 saves 84 games 4.22 ERA 179 innings
13-10 17 saves 77 games 3.00 ERA 168 innings
14-16 19 saves 80 games 3.74 ERA 183 innings
10-10 23 saves 64 games 3.10 ERA 105 innings
He has only allowed 25 HR's in over 600 innings, so he is Mr. Groundball.
