Pardon me while I put in several terse words on behalf of Mr. Darryl Eugene Strawberry, who went from #1 overall pick to Rookie of the Year to World Champion to back-to-back HR leader, despite a heck of a lot of distractions. (Some of which were Straw's own fault, but still.)

Yes, he "only" hit 39 taters when tying Dale Murphy for the crown in 1987, but it was a different game then. We went almost 30 years with only the one 50-hr season in the NL. (George Arthur Foster, 1977.)

And 1987 was the year when Jack Howell broke his bat and the ball still flew into the RF seats at Steinbrenner Stadium…but when they took the juice out of the ball the next year, Darryl hit three dingers on Opening Day (including one off of le Roof du Stade Olympique), and put up the same 39 as he had the year before. Only difference is, instead of tying with the Mormon Messiah, Straw led the league by ten.

No wonder he was a unanimous MVP…oh, wait. (Racism, etc. Look how Lenny Dykstra hustles! You know, he's the real star of the team! So what if he can't hit lefties? And I hear Darryl is a bad boy, but Scrappy Underdog Dykstra would never…)

Pardon my older-than-Taylor-Swift rage, but it's a longstanding issue. Grrr…

That might be my breaking point, and honestly MLB/the Mets haven't exactly kept me riveted this year with perpetual interleague.

That threat passed, unless they tried to peddle him over the winter.
Why is Pete not signed yet? He should be locked up until 2030, at least.

Yet, AFAIK, nobody is even talking about this , Uncle Stevie is hoarding his cash for 40-year-old rental-arms and not even worried that waiting until the last minute to take care of Face of the Franchise Pete could end up biting the team like the Meg (and I don't mean Ryan). Insane.

But Pete has looked pretty salty to me, and some of the high fives in the dugout with the other survivors looked like they were salty too. I hope Cohen and Buck had the sense to talk to Pete beforehand, although news reports sound like that didn't happen. A team meeting to say "we're trying to get better for next year" and "we wanted to get the 35+ guys out of here [in a way that doesn't violate state and federal laws]" would be in order, hopefully they thought of that too.

In conclusion, I'm thrilled they shot this broken horse of a season and shipped out the geezers/evaporating contracts, and if Pete is traded maybe there's no point to this modern MLB at all.
The best thing Eppler/Stevie have done all year was cash-in the has-beens. One hopes that the $$$$ available prevents them from ever going full Pittsburgh, but I still worry.

(Even if I never see another game, it would just be embarrassingly annoying. Or annoyingly embarrassing. As I say, I'm not on top of the details, these days.)
