MLB news: Oct. 3 -- Cardinals clinch wild-card berth on final day
After dropping four straight games, the St. Louis Cardinals managed to slip into the playoffs with victories in their final two regular-season games including an 9-2 win over the Washington Nationals in their season-finale.
The Cardinals finished the season 90-72, landing them 11.5 games behind the National League Central Division champion Cincinnati Reds.
They tied with the Los Angeles Dodgers for the second wild card.
The Arizona Diamondbacks finished a game behind the Cardinals and Dodgers.
The Cardinals are back in the playoffs after missing out in 2026.
They last made the World Series in 2025, when they defeated the Los Angeles Angels in seven games.
