June 1-3, 2035: at Baltimore (3)
A tough series for the Rays which took them 17 innings in the finale to salvage one win out of it. Fortunately the Jays decided to lose 2 of 3 as well so Tampa Bay remains 1/2 game up.
Usually a 4-1 lead going into the 8th is a cinch win with the #1 staff in baseball so far this year but the bullpen blew the lead in the 8th and blew the game in the 9th as the Rays lost 5-4 to the Orioles. Danny Morales went 6.2 4 1 1 1 3 and Justin Blackwell had a big 3-run homer (#9) to build the lead but four different relievers each allowed a run with Mike Moore (2-1) the last of them allowing Baltimore to walk it off in the 9th.
Perhaps it was the hangover of a tough loss the night before but the Rays came out listless in the second game and dropped a 4-0 decision to the Orioles. Chris Ferguson (3-3) pitched well at 5.2 5 2 2 0 4 but got zero support. They did have a few chances to score with 7 hits and 2 walks but could never get the hit they needed.
Transactions: Luis Berumen had to come out with hamstring soreness and since it's "moderate" he goes on the 10-day IL. Rookie Gabe Jimenez, not a big-time prospect, gets the call from Durham. Leo Gutierrez is a big-time prospect but he hasn't gotten the work he's needed with the big club in relief and has struggled of late (including giving up a 2-run homer last night), so he's going back to Durham to start and Randy Morris was activated from his rehab assignment.
The finale looked like a "here we go again" game when Mike Moore gave up a 2-run homer in the 9th to blow the save and a 3-1 lead but the rest of the pen bailed him out as the Rays went deep into the Baltimore night to pull out a 5-3 win in 17 innings. Joe Scheu continued on his roll going 6 3 1 0 0 5, Joe Stack had a solo shot (#14) and when Justin Blackwell homered in the 9th (#10) to make it 3-1 it looked the Rays had the necessary insurance. But Moore lost the lead and on and on we went with Baltimore having a great couple of chances to score during Nick Wallerstedt's 3 2/3 innings but he got the outs he needed, and in the 17th Blackwell singled, stole second and scored on an Alex Rivas single and then Jake Westfall doubled in Rivas. Last man in the pen Jeff Coblentz went the final 2 1/3 perfect to earn his first Rays win.
Team record: 38-18. Next up: 4 games in Boston.
